Life Transitions
Therapy
A new chapter can feel like losing your direction. Therapy helps you find it again and decide where you are going next.
Life Transitions and Midlife Crisis Navigation
Life is full of change, and even the changes you chose can bring anxiety, doubt, and grief for the person you used to be. Silicon Valley Therapy offers structured, goal-oriented therapy for adults navigating major life transitions, in person in Los Gatos or online anywhere in California.
Change is one of the most common reasons people start therapy, and one of the most common reasons therapy works. Whether it is a career pivot, a move, a divorce, a new baby, or a quiet sense that the old plan no longer fits, our therapists help you move through it with clarity and a plan.

We Can Help with these Life Transitions
Some of the most common reasons people come to us:
- A career change, layoff, or promotion that changed everything
- Relocating to the Bay Area, or leaving it
- Becoming a parent
- Starting or ending a significant relationship, including divorce
- The death of someone close to you
- Becoming a caregiver for a parent or partner
- A financial setback or a windfall that shifted your plans
- Kids leaving home
- Retirement or stepping back from a career that defined you
- A general sense the next step is unclear, and the old plan no longer fits
If your situation is not on this list, that is fine. The work is the same: figure out what this change means for you and move through it with intention.

Four Kinds of Transitions
Why It Helps to Name Yours
Not every transition looks like a crisis. Some sneak up on you. Knowing which kind you are in makes it easier to understand why it feels the way it does.
The One You Saw Coming
Graduating. Getting married. Having a baby. Starting the job you worked years for. You planned it, and it still knocked you sideways. Expected changes carry expectations, and when the reality does not match the picture in your head, it is easy to feel like you are failing at something you were supposed to be happy about.
The One That Blind-Sided You
A layoff. A diagnosis. A breakup you did not see coming. A phone call that split life into before and after. These are the hardest transitions, and often the ones people grow the most from once the ground stops moving.
The One That Crept Up On You
You did not decide to become the person who works every weekend, or who stopped calling friends, or who quietly outgrew a relationship. Nothing happened. And then one day you looked up and realized everything had.
The One That Never Happened
The promotion that went to someone else. The pregnancy that did not come. The move you kept putting off until it was too late. Grieving a future that did not arrive is real grief, and most people do not give themselves permission to feel it.
If you’re facing these changes, talking to a licensed therapist can make a real difference. Visit us for in-person therapy in Los Gatos or online in San Jose, Campbell, or anywhere across California.
Midlife Crisis or Midlife Reckoning?
“Midlife crisis” gets used as a punchline. What it usually describes is something more serious: a point, often somewhere between 35 and 55, where you look at your career, your relationships, and your health and ask whether this is the life you meant to build.
That question is worth taking seriously. It can lead to impulsive decisions, or it can lead to some of the most meaningful changes you will ever make. Therapy helps you tell the difference. We work with professionals who have achieved a great deal on paper and still feel restless, stuck, or unsure what comes next.
How Life Transitions Affect You
Transitions hit everyone differently, but they rarely stay in one lane. Stress, anxiety, and sadness are common. So are trouble sleeping, changes in appetite, irritability, and panic attacks. Many people find themselves pulling away from friends and family right when they need them most, or overworking to avoid sitting with the uncertainty. None of this means something is wrong with you. It means something big is happening and you are trying to carry it alone.

How Therapy Helps During a Life Transition
Therapy at Silicon Valley Therapy is structured and goal-oriented. Early on, you and your therapist get clear on what this transition is asking of you and set goals for the work. Then you check in on progress regularly, adjust what is not working, and keep moving forward.
For life transitions, that typically looks like:
- Making sense of what you are feeling – Naming the grief, fear, and relief that often show up together, and reducing the isolation that comes from thinking you should be handling this better.
- Building on what already works – You have gotten through hard things before. We help you identify the strengths and supports you already have and put them to use.
- Practical tools for the hard days – Skills for managing anxiety, low mood, and the spiral of “what if” thinking, so you can function while things are still uncertain.
- Deciding what comes next – Setting short-term and longer-term goals so the transition becomes something you are steering, not something happening to you.

ABOUT SILICON VALLEY THERAPY & MARRIAGE COUNSELING SERVICES INC
Why Work With Silicon Valley Therapy
At Silicon Valley Therapy, we believe that life is about progress, not perfection.
When the demands on your time and energy are constant, the pressure to make it look like everything is ok can lead to burnout, stress, and a disconnection from your own needs.
The speed of life, coupled with the pressure to succeed, makes it easy to lose touch with what truly matters—leaving you feeling overwhelmed, hurting, and unfulfilled. Trying to “think” your way out of your pain is a short-term solution for a situation that requires deeper emotional understanding and support.
With over 28 years of combined experience, our team is dedicated to providing results-driven, client-centered, and compassionate care. We work with you to achieve a deeper understanding of yourself, identify and change patterns that lead to unwanted outcomes, and help you reach your goals in all areas of life.
We help you slow down, reflect, and reconnect with what truly matters on your path to loving the life your living.
Our therapy is

Client-Centered
We listen, understand, and help you achieve your specific goals—together.

Compassionate
We provide a compassionate and safe space to share the words you’ve only thought in your head.

Results-Driven
We help you make real progress in healing the parts of you that are keeping you from fully living.
Our Approach
We use these approaches for Life Transitions:

Cognitive Behavioral and Mindfulness Therapy (CBT)
Transitions tend to come with a running commentary: I should have seen this coming, I am too old for this, everyone else has it figured out." CBT helps you catch those patterns and replace them with something more accurate and useful. Mindfulness brings you back to the present. Breathing and grounding practices help regulate the anxiety that transitions stir up.

Solution Focused Therapy
When the future is uncertain, it helps to focus on the next right step. Solution-focused work concentrates on the problems in front of you right now and what you can do about them this week. It uses a grading system to incrementally move you forward in your goals.

Narrative Therapy
A transition can feel like it is the whole story. Narrative therapy puts some distance between you and the change, so you can see it as one chapter and decide how you want the next one to read. Build your new script and create your new role.

FAQs About Life Transitions Therapy
How long does life transition therapy take?
It depends on what you are facing and what you want to get out of it. You and your therapist set goals early, check in on progress regularly, and decide together when the work is done.
Is this the same as career counseling?
Not exactly. Career counselors focus on resumes, job searches, and career paths. We focus on the emotional side: the fear of making the wrong choice, the identity shift of leaving a role, the stress of a layoff. Many clients do both.
Do you work with teens?
Yes. Transitions like starting high school, heading to college, or a family move affect teens deeply. Several of our therapists work with teens and their families.
What if I am not sure my situation counts as a transition?
If something has changed and you are struggling to adjust, it counts. A complimentary consultation is a good place to talk it through.
Where are you located? Our office is in Los Gatos, serving San Jose, Campbell, Saratoga, and the greater Silicon Valley area. We also offer online therapy to clients anywhere in California.
Do you take insurance? Most PPO plans include out-of-network benefits, and many of our clients get a meaningful portion of each session reimbursed. We provide a superbill you can submit to your plan, and during your complimentary consultation we will show you exactly how to find out what your coverage looks like.
Start with a free 20-minute consult. We will talk through what is going on and match you with a therapist who is a good fit.
